Apple: Samsung making 'standard-setting abuses' with patents

Apple in a response to Samsung's countersuit late Monday accused the Korean company of abusing its stance on patent licensing terms. The firm accused Samsung of "serial standard-setting abuses" by illegally getting monopoly status in fields where its patents are billed as essential to the technology and promptly 'tricking' standards bodies by hiding its requirements around Fair, Reasonable, and Non-Discriminatory (FRAND) licensing terms, letting it abuse its claims against others. Apple contended that Samsung's lawsuit was an "anticompetitive ambush" and was exploit...

Running winexe on the Mac

If you are a Unix admin and also have to maintain Windows servers, you will find winexe a must command line utility to have in your arsenal.

Until recently I have been able to do this only on Linux boxes. I have compiled it and it works great however, on Mac OS X I have not had any luck until a few days I came across this site. There are also links provided to the winexe binary packages here.

So, once you install it, the usage is simple:

Here is a quick exemple.

To get the route table on the Windows machine (using your correct IP address and other appropriate information):

winexe -U YOURDOMAIN/YourAccount%YourPassword //172.16.2.xxx 'route print'

If you want to start a Windows service:

winexe -U YOURDOMAIN/YourAccount%YourPassword //172.16.2.xxx 'net start "Service Name"'

Or to kill a Windows service:

10.7: Improved Arrange By option in Finders column view

This may be obvious, but I hadn't seen it anywhere. Lion's Finder has a new option in the View Options window for Column views: Arrange By.

This setting allows you to group items by name, kind, application, various dates, size, and label. Within these groups, you can still sort by name, date modified, etc.

[crarko adds: This actually appeared in Snow Leopard, but has been enhanced in Lion, including the addition of keyboard equivalents. I'll publish it to draw people's attention to the feature, which is super-handy if you live in Column view, like I do.]

Maintaining a Dynamic DNS automatically.

Dynamic DNS services provide you with a domain name you can use with a non-static IP address, like most home computers have. To use these requires some action to periodically contact the DNS server and let it know if your Dynamic IP address changed. Usually there are complicated scripts provided to do this, and MacOSXHints has published a few.

However one can greatly simplify this with a launchDaemon and a single built in OSX unix command.

First, this assumes that you have set up an account with a Dynamic DNS service. I use the free service provided by FreeDNS. One updates this simply by loading a web page URL. The act of making that page request alerts the DynamicDNS of your IP address and it updates.

Thus all we need is a LaunchDaemon that runs every hour that reloads that page. Here is an example: ...

Wacom Inkling bridges freehand sketches with digital imaging

Wacom has unveiled its latest graphic design input product, the Inkling. In a video demo of the product (embedded below), Wacom shows how the device allows a graphic artist to sketch images in free-hand on any paper using a pressure sensitive digital sketch pen. The device bridges the gap between paper sketching and digital drawing by giving users the ability to sketch with real ink on paper and capture their concepts digitally so that they can be later refined on their computer....

Samsung unveils Series 7 notebooks with MacBook cues

Samsung as part of events on Tuesday brought a new notebook line to the US. Both take some, though not all, of their cues from Apple's MacBook Pro, including an oversized, 'buttonless' trackpad (here run by Elan and not Synaptics), illuminated chiclet keys, and aluminum across most of the body. Space efficiency is key, Samsung says: a 15.6-inch model can comfortably fit a numeric keypad, while the '13-inch' version has a 14-inch display and uses an extra-thin bezel to fit into the smaller display frame....
